Great Marble Challenge!!!

My Writing: Last term in Te Ngahere we did something called the Great Marble Challenge. We had to create our own marble ramp in our groups and we had to roll our marble down our ramp and it had to go exactly 110 centimeters away from the end of the ramp. We could choose between 2 types of marbles a large one or a small one. We decided to chose the large marble because it will roll down the ramp with more friction which will make it go faster. We were testing our marble ramp and it was going pretty well. It was landing about 2mm away from 110cm. We decided to make our marble ramp go up on more of an angle to give the marble more speed. It was now time to test and our group got 27 points.

Have you ever done something similar to this?

Mosaic Art

In Te Ngahere we started to learn about a piece of art called mosaic art. We were practicing this to make another piece of artwork about the ngahere with our QR codes on them. Mosaic art is when there is lots of little shapes creating one big piece of art. First we inserted a picture of something onto a Google drawing and we had to put the right shapes on the right parts and put in the right colours. I decided to do a tiger I grabbed an image that I like and I started to trace around it. I think that I could of used more colours in my art  instead of just using 2 colours for the body. I think that I really did the head good and when I was finished I removed the image to find my mosaic art finished. I also decided to add in some of the bush around the tiger. Have you ever done mosaic art before

Here is my mosaic art

Indigeonous Art

In Te Ngahere the years sixes have been learning about an Australian dot art. I really liked doing this art because of what we had to do which was painting the dots and drawing our silhouette. Then after we finished we had to make a DLO to show what we learnt when making this art and how to make it and then show the finished result. We also watched an episode of David Attenborough to learn about Australia. Have you ever heard of this dot art?

Here is my DLO and indigeonous art.

Scientific Method

In Te Ngahere we have been learning about the Scientific Method and how it works. We had to make a Google Drawing and show the 8 steps of the Scientific Method. First we had to read an article telling us about the scientific method and then we had to make our Scientific Method Infographic. The first step of the scientific method is that you have to ask yourself a question that you want to find out about and then the second step is that you need to collect data or info to show what you found. Then the next step is that you have to make a hypothesis which is what you think will happen in you experiment. Step 4 is that you need to test your hypothesis, and then step 5 you have to analyze your results and step 6 is that if your hypothesis didn’t work you can modify it to change it up. Step 7 is that you must present a conclusion or to rewind your learning and finally step 8 is that you can retest everything if you need to. So there is the 8 steps of the Scientific Method.

Have you ever done anything like this before.

The Science Roadshow

In Te Ngahere we had a bit of a class trip. We had hopped on the bus and we headed over to Bay of Islands College to watch the Science Roadshow and to see all of the students’ science projects. I learnt about different chemicals and how things work and also about the scientific method. There were some really amazing projects and interesting ones like one that included a solar powered light to make a car drive; it was really cool. We were in groups of 3 and we had to stay together. There were some other amazing projects like a cool thing which made a beach ball float and stay still. I also liked something where you tasted the honey and you have to guess what flavour honey you got. It was very cool and then we watched one more show at the end then we went back onto the bus and went back to school. My favourite part was looking at the solar powered car because it was so cool how they put a solar powered light on a car and then when you hovered a torch over it it moved.

Wings Writing

In Te Ngahere we have been learning to identify what we have done well in our writing like language features such as emotive language and vivid adjectives. We also tried to use some mood and atmosphere in our writing. First we watched a video and we had to pick a scene to write about it. The video was about a boy and some big black creatures and him wanting to fly again. I decided to right about a scene when he was going to launch himself into the air and fly. We did this to try and make our writing better every time we do this.

Have you ever done writing like this?

Here is my writing:

The sky was a hideous light orange colour when the boy made a brand new wing made of brown leather then he struggled to push his catapult out of his workshop but successfully did it and took a look at it, he was very proud of his invention. He sits on it nervously hoping that it will not malfunction.  Then he pulls the lever and WOOSH he goes flying  he then starts flying freely and happily he was so thrilled that he could fly again. until something disturbs him, his wing starts to wobble and come undone and then unfortunately he falls to the ground scared and frightened.

He wakes up unconscious only to see big black monstrous creatures with big long pale fingers picking the boy up and putting him back on the ground. The black monsters turn around and see a girl playing a flute. The girl flies away. While the black monsters chase after her only to slash off her left wing leaving her on the ground helpless and sad.

Cybersmart Challenge

In Te Ngahere we have been doing something called the Cybersmart Challenge. For this activity we learnt how to use tools on Google drawing to make an animal out of shapes. The animal I chose to make was a penguin. It was actually a lot easier because I knew how to use the tools properly. I used all sorts of shapes in my penguin and when I had finished I add a bit of colour. I then made a background with using different shape the I coloured it to look like ice, then I coloured the sky and then I was finished. I also learnt how to group everything and then duplicate it. We did this activity to learn about the other tools on google drawing that would make it a lot easier. I really liked doing this because it was fun and I liked learning about it and making my penguin.

EPro8 Activity

In Te Ngahere the years Sixes did an activity called EPro8. EPro8 is activities related to measurement. We also did this to see how well we work together, and this week we were making catapults. We were learning about two different kinds of energy. They were called potential energy and kinetic energy, Kinetic energy is when it is moving and potential energy is when It is stored. We had to make our catapults using 30 bamboo sticks, a roll of tape, a roll of string, 30 rubber bands, 2 A4 pieces of paper and a piece of A3 paper. We also used a ping pong ball to fire and we used a measuring tape to measure where it landed. The ball had to go  at least 3 meters before hitting the ground. We had a group of four and we started thinking of a way so that is was stable and it was able to launch. We got up to building the base and we used rubber bands to hold it together. Then two of us was working on the base while the other two was working on the launching part. It was very hard because we couldn’t find a way to make a launching mechanism. What was also hard was that we just couldn’t work together and I was getting stressed out. We then took apart the catapult and then restarted. We managed to finish our catapult and we tested it. We were 100mm away from 3 meters and so we added more rubber bands on the top so it would get more power from the potential energy. We then tested it and as we were done the timer ran out. It was a very challenging activity. Next time I will try work as a team.

Have you ever made a catapult before?

Suspicious Instructions

For the first day of term 2 in Te Ngahere we did a reading test to see how good we follow instructions. We got a piece of paper with 23 questions and they were a bit confusing but also suspicious.

We had 4 minutes to do the test and I was a bit nervous. I started doing the test. The 1st instruction said read out all the questions carefully before doing anything. I actually didn’t read it I was just reading part of it and then assumed I knew what we had to do. The 2nd instruction said “write your name in the upper left hand corner” so I did that. Moving on I got up to question 19 which said “on the reverse side of the paper add 8950 and 9805” after I finished instruction 19 the time was up. We went down to the mat and the teacher explained what everyone did wrong. We had to actually read all the instructions and then do question 1 and 2 and everyone had failed. After I realised what we did wrong, I felt so silly. From now on I am going to try and read things as carefully as I can.

Have you ever done a test like this before?

Te Reo Maori

In Te Ngahere we have been doing something called E.P, this stands for Education Perfect. On Education Perfect we have been learning how to speak Maori. We had to make a DLO and screencastify ourselves saying the Maori words, we were learning to say the alphabet, greetings and place names in Maori. This site has really helped me pronounce the Maori words correct and properly.

You should use Education Perfect to help you with lots of stuff.

Smart Surfing

In Te Ngahere we have been doing a thing in our class called smart surfing. Smart surfing is a thing about how you type your searches into Google. It really helps because it will give you a more accurate information than typing in the whole question, for example “what is the world's largest spider” you have to pick the key words like world, largest and spider then you just need to type in your keywords and then you have a more accurate information. It really does help and you can know things better. I wanted to type in a question like what are long tailed bats threats so all I typed in was long tailed bat threats and it came up with a much better answer.  I learnt lots of different stuff by doing smart surfing and it made me more successful.

Now try this out yourself.

Coastal Seas

In Te Ngahere we have been learning about the coastal seas. We have been learning about marine animals, different places in the oceans and the different oceans. We watched a video about the coastal seas and I learnt a ton of facts about sea animals. For my animal I chose the White Tip Shark. I found very cool facts about this marine creature and now I will share some facts about the Bottlenose Dolphin, the White Tip Shark, a Wrasse, a Humpback Whale and Kelp. This is my groups DLO.

Magnificent Maths

In Te Ngahere we have been doing maths. We had to do 10 questions and we could pick any strategy to solve this problem. There was addition and subtraction problems what I learnt was that it is really hard to solve subtraction problems by using place value partitioning . I solved all the problems using algorithm and it was really cool.  Then when we had finished we got a partner and we had to mark each others work. I really enjoyed doing this because it was helping we relearn what I already knew. It is the best strategy to use for me because it is the easiest one I know. In this I also learnt how to use different strategies to solve addition and subtraction problems.

Beautiful Butter Chicken

Yesterday in our class we went to a place called Greens in Paihia. We went to Greens because it was someone's birthday and his name is Shivam. His parents owned the restaurant called Greens and they offered us to go there for lunch. After we sat down about 3 minutes later we got cans of Coke and Sprite. Then soon we got trays of butter chicken, rice and naan bread. I was very excited. I took my first bite of the food and it was FABULOUS I started stuffing my face and the naan bread was also as good as the butter chicken. I then took a sip of my drink I was full after an amazing dish. But then it just kept getting better, Shivams parents then came out with a big trolley filled with easter eggs. After that we gave Shivam a birthday card and we started singing happy birthday. Then after eating we said thank you by singing some waiata for his parents and then we left.

Have you ever been to Greens before?

TaskMaster

In Te Ngahere we have been doing a thing in our class called taskmaster. The activity we did contained a runner and we also had a drawer. The runner had to tell the drawer what to draw and the runner had to makes sure that the drawer was doing it right. The challenging part for the drawer was that they could not see the picture so we had to go outside and see the picture ourselves. We did this activity twice. The first time I was in a group of 2 as the runner. The second time I was in a group of 3 as the runner again. The first time was hard because it was just so hard to tell them what to draw and where to draw it. I was getting very frustrated because they were drawing it wrong. The hardest thing was that we couldn’t touch the paper and we had to do the drawings in specific colours. The round was over and we had only drawn 6 things out of 12 so we still had 6 to go. The second round I was in a different group of 3 so only one of us could run at a time. We had the same picture as last time and we had to do it again. The second time was a bit better than the last time. We got 10 out of 12 and we just had 2 more to go. Then after the second round we compared both the pictures to the teachers. The were a lot different.

Terrific Tips To Help You Measure

In Te Ngahere we have been learning about measurement. We had a sheet of paper and we had to measure the objects on the paper. We were also in  groups of three so we had to work together as a team.

I learnt that 30cm is equivalent to 300mm and that 1m is 1000mm.

What I found hard was measuring in the right place like and using the tape measure.

Have you measured with a tape measure before?

Here is my DLO

Terrifying Tsunami

On Friday it was just a regular day until there was a tsunami warning. The whole of the Bay Of Islands had to evacuate. We had to sit down on the mat and do the roll to make sure everyone was here. Then we had to go up the big hill next to our school called Totara Heights. It was hard work to walk up my legs started to really hurt. Once we got up the hill we had to sit down and do the roll again for safety reasons. We slowly moved up the hill while people were getting picked up by their parents. Then we stood up and watched the water rise. Everyone was getting thirsty and hungry and some were using the teacher’s phone to call their parents. After a while a lady came out a gave us some fruit. Then about an hour later people started being very nice and giving us water and food. After that we found a way to keep ourselves entertained by reading a quiz. Soon two people came out and gave us wieners and they we delicious!!!

Then they came out with a second batch and they were being very kind. Then the principal went down to go get everyone’s bags. We then had a proper feed with our lunch boxes and I wasn’t bored anymore. Soon we got the all clear sign and we got to go back down to school. We had to do the roll once more to make sure everyone was here. And so we made our journey down the big hill; Totara Heights. We eventually got back into our class and we were safe at last. We then got an ice cream. Soon my mum came and picked me up.

It was a very interesting day. Have you ever experienced anything like this?

Fantastic Things About The Ecosystem

In Te Ngahere for the past few weeks we have been learning about the ecosystem. We had to say what we already knew what we discovered and what we now understand.

I learnt what happens in the ecosystem and there are 3 important things in it. The consumer, producer and the decomposer. The producers contain sunlight which is called solar energy so that the producers can eat then the decomposers start to eat the leftover dead animals like the bones and rotten flesh.

What I found hard was understanding how the ecosystem works and collecting and writing down my new understandings.

Do you know anything about the ecosystem?

Here is my DLO about the ecosystem.

Things You Need To Know About Kawa Of Care

In Te Ngahere we have been learning about the kawa of care. We had to make an animation and then screencastify it, to show you how to take care of your chromebook.

I learnt that you should not charge your chromebook with the case on because the case puts pressure on the charger then the charger will break.

Enjoy the animation.

What Do You Know About Roy Lichtenstein

In Te Ngahere we have been learning about the pop artist Roy Lichtenstein.

He made art that was popular at the time and used interesting techniques, like the Ben Day Dots. They were made with little dots then he coloured them in to make nice pieces of art. The Clever Colours were lots of different colours and shapes to make a good piece of artwork. We had to collect important facts about him. We are also making our own self portraits inspired by Roy Lichtenstein's technique the ben day dots. The hard part of doing the portraits is colouring the dots, it is very hard and it hurts your hand. Here are some facts about Roy Lichtenstein now: Roy Lichtenstein was one of the groups of artist making in the 1960’S pop artists, He made paintings inspired by comics and cartoons and he normally used the ben day dots technique. Have you ever heard of Roy Lichtenstein?
